SOCIAL COLLABORATIVE SITES APPROPRIATE FOR ONLINE EDUCATIONAL LEARNING!

QUESTION TWO:

(A)   Teachers of Web 2.0 are now faced with new issues regarding information processing. Teachers can access information that would otherwise be inaccessible.

(a1)Teachers themselves have become more accessible. No longer are teachers restricted to JUST the classroom. They are available online, for students to talk to in regards to school work. This is an important aspect for students especially that in year twelve approaching the HSC. To be able to converse with the teachers, students are able to talk about issues, work and get help when they need it.

(a2) Web 2.0 has become a clever way to introduce new topics to students in an interesting and engaging way. As we have seen through the development of our own classroom online project, students are able to engage more comprehensively to Web 2.0 technologies then if it were a normal classroom environment.

The following video will explain initiatives sought after by the introduction of Web 2.0 technologies to education. Teacher tube

(a3) Another aspect of information accessibility is the idea that students themselves need to gain the information and share it around. By collaborating with each other and developing sites that SHARE information students have information at their fingertips thanks to their classmates.

Wikis, Blogs and social book marking sites all allow students to access information readily. Popular Book marking site, Del.icio.us is a perfect example of how online collaboration is used in learning and education.

The following clip shows how Del.icio.us is used as a social book marking site for teachers.

(B) Encouraging and motivating students is easily achieved through the use of Web 2.0 technologies. Ultimately students are in their element using these technologies. They are aware of how they work its capabilities and its ability to engage people immediately. Most importantly Web 2.0 attracts students because to its ability to cater for all the different learning styles teachers will find amongst their students.

(B)   Classroom management may be seen as an issue for teachers using Web 2.0. Off task behavior is bound to occur with the many distractions offered by the World Wide Web. Distractions such as other online social sites, Facebook and MySpace offer students seemingly more interesting opportunities than set work does. So why not incorporate both of these popular sites into the school work?

Facebook and MySpace are able to offer students the familiarity of friends incorporating it to their school work. Teachers are also able to set up accounts for the class; security settings are applicable to ensure the safety of all students. Students would enjoy using these popular sites for working in and off task behavior would be kept to a minimum as they would be emerged in their set task.

(C)  Blooms higher level learning MUST be incorporated into learning online. Otherwise the likelihood of the task being a waste of time is high.

Students need to be asked analytical questions but further from that they need to be able to reflect upon their newly gained knowledge. They need to be able to sit back after working online and think, what have I learnt? How has this helped me? Although students should ALWAYS be asking these questions it is vital that after time spent on their online work they are reflective upon the process. They will have learnt more than expected.

Question one:(a)    internet address for the wiki: http://tellingthetruth.pbwiki.com

(b)    Five Key issues challenging us in the development of the Wiki.

(1)   COLLABORATION: it is important and vital aspects in the development of this project that students, teachers and parents work together to make the assignment work.

(2)   Motivating students to work on the assignment: To encourage students to work on the assignment we needed to engage with multiple intelligences: And incorporate as many of these as possible to make the assignment as interesting and engaging as possible.

3)   Including parents in a constructive and educational way: for this assignment to work parents needed to be included. Not only would this help the parents understand the function of Web 2.0 but also would allow students to engage with their learning at a deeper and more sophisticated level. Students become the teachers of Web 2.0 and their content area becomes clearer and of deeper understanding.

(4)   Making sure the assignment develops deep learning and understanding for students. Students in year twelve MUST begin to learn at a deeper level in order to take on the HSC and further educational studies. It is vital that students develop the skills needed in order to learn at the most appropriate level. Incorporating Blooms taxonomy students are able to undertake learning at a far deeper understanding. We incorporated as many aspects of Blooms taxonomy through the development of activities and questions that were asked. Below is how we implemented this into our project.

Firstly they are asked to CREATE a newspaper article relevant to the set headline (this then builds upon their knowledge and understanding of the requirements of newspapers articles, and applying them in this set context).

The students are again to CREATE a video/footage by putting together these known elements to form a coherent and functional whole; this is building upon all previously learnt cognitive understandings.

Next the students are required to UNDERSTAND, APPLY and ANALYSE relevant images in relation to their previous knowledge and understanding of the topic/concept- Telling the Truth.

Throughout the entire task, students are required to reflect, REMEMBER, ANALYSE and EVALUATE their contribution to the task, their understanding of key concepts and the success of the completed project. Students are required to reflect descriptively on their progress, provide a self- reflection and a critical reflection. Within this journal, the students are making judgments based on criteria and standards through checking and critiquing.

(5)   Allowing students to construct their own knowledge and understanding for students to learn the MOST and develop a deeper understanding of their content area it is vital that students construct their own knowledge. It is no use giving students a task where they can access the information but not process it. By collaborating with other students, students are able to develop a broader understanding of their subject area. The assignment aims to highlight social interaction theory posed by Vygotsky.

( C) Collaboration on this assignment is VITAL in producing effective learning and deep understanding. Along with personal motivation, collaborating with others to access the information needed provides students with knowledge that they would not have been able to access if on their own. Dreikurs key human driver helps us understand the ways in which students learn and motivate themselves. This in incorporation with collaborative learning, allows students to attain the most out of the learning experience and allows teachers ways in which to encourage and promote DEEPER learning.

Web 2.0 Essay By Melissa Walker

Web 2.0 is essentially an increasing range of software that supports a variety of technologies for open and collaborative communication, learning and creativity. Discuss.  Web 2.0 offers a variety of ways to introduce new learning styles into the classroom. Web 2.0 allows students to actively engage with their learning, by collaborating and communicating with other members of the classroom. Web 2.0 is a creative way to adapt to the variety of learning styles of students and is fast becoming an important and vital aspect in the classroom. Web 2.0 is the second generation of web technologies that involve social networking sites, the use of Folksonomy and the introduction of collaboration and sharing between users (wikipedia, web 2.0, 2007).  Web 2.0 is a new and exiting way for people, especially students to use the Internet. Web 2.0 insists and encourages students to actively engage with their learning experience through the use of Blogs, Wiki’s and also employs the use of Folksonomy rather than the web 1.0 stage of taxonomy. Folksonomy is the method of creating tags to annotate and categorize content from the Internet (Pink, New York Times, 2005) and is a developed form of searching on the Internet. Sites such as Del.icio.us are important aspects of web 2.0 and the use of Folksonomy. Students need to research their topics and then post relative pages on this Web 2.0 page. Students can also gain access to other important information other students have researched. Web 2.0 is a collaborative online learning environment and students need to immerse themselves in the features to broaden their learning experience. In conjunction with the works and research of Piaget and Bruner, in regards to the constructivist theory, web 2.0 displays a strong connection with constructivism. Students when using web 2.0 must be active in their learning and research. The information should not just be handed to the students from the internet. Students must actively engage with the text they are reading, posting their own thoughts on the text in a blog or group collaboration site such as pbwiki. This process allows students to process the information and learn from each other. The use of blogs and Wiki’s in the classroom is revolutionary, but it is also the future. Education is leading towards the process of technology that incorporates collaborative group exercises and learning. The internet in education has become interactive and students along with teachers need to accommodate for this.  The use of web 2.0, unlike the normal classroom, offers a variety of educational pathways otherwise inaccessible to students and teachers. Web 2.0 is a more appealing pathway to educating students as it has the capabilities to attract more students to its opportunities. Web 2.0 addresses more features that Gardner regards as students multiple intelligences. Students no longer need to be subjected to boring lessons, where the only piece of technology is the light switch. Students now have an opportunity to use site such as you tube, Facebook and even MySpace as a way of educating themselves and others about the importance of their subject areas. Students learn differently as we all know, there are musical students, visual, kinesthetic, logical and linguistic learners and teachers need to be able to accommodate for all of these learning styles in an ideal lesson. However pens, paper and whiteboards do not and will not address all these types of learners, with web 2.0 however students will be able to learn their own way at their own pace. Instead of pushing one common way to learn onto students they are given the opportunity to find out how they learn best themselves and implement this into their learning activities.  Teachers are not, however becoming irrelevant as all of these technologies need a mediator and someone to bring the entire collaborative process together. Students know how to use social collaborative sites such as Facebook and MySpace however they need to be informed on how to use them educationally and gain the most out of the experiences of using these sites. Facebook and MySpace a perfect examples of how teachers can apply modern, social sites into the subject content area. Students need to be aware of all of the facilities that these sites have to offer. They offer immediate collaboration with their classmates, they allow other aides such as visual and musical stimulants for the learning experience and more importantly ALL of the students can access and contribute to the site and the information being applied. Students can immediately inform their classmates about new updated information or offer additional comments. Facebook and MySpace as educational aides is a way that web 2.0 is and can be introduced into the school environment with the greatest possible outcomes. Wiki’s  and blogs are being defined as the ‘online classrooms’ Blogs while more personal than Wiki’s allows a student a place on the internet where they can post their own personal opinions about topics, while also posting links to educational journals, websites and other important sites for their research process. Students will find the experience of an online blog interesting and rewarding. This blog is their own space and they are allowed the freedom to make it as creative as possible. While some students are not as creative as others, students are able to post written work, photos, videos, pod casts etc on their Blogs.  Wiki’s similarly to Blogs allow students their own space on the Internet to post educational information regarding their subject area. However while Blogs are usually done individually, the Wiki is a group collaborative activity and requires focused and equal group work application. The Wiki is a group of web pages produced by the students and requires a group effort to keep the Wiki updated with relevant information. Wiki employs a lot of the constructivism approach to its set up. It requires students to construct a site with the relevant information and therefore develop their current knowledge, building upon what they already know.   The Del.icio.us social book-marking site is an integral part of the web 2.0 experience. This site is the epitome of the web 2.0 experience for students as it employs many of the aspects that web 2.0 is developed upon. Del.icio.us is a website that uses Folksonomy as its main use, as opposed to the web 1.0 experience of taxonomy. Students need to ‘tag’ sites as their favorites and the most important part about this site, the fact that the students can collaborate and get information off each other, which is of course the main idea behind constructivism. Allowing students the freedom to explore their options for educational opportunities on the Internet and then gather the information in one place for others to see and use.    Web 2.0 allows students to become creative with the way that they use the Internet for educational purposes. Students no longer need to stop doing work once they leave the classroom. The most accessible classroom these days is in their own homes, or in their bags. The computer and the Internet has now become the classroom of the future and students will respond to this much better and gain more knowledge from its usage. Web 2.0 is the future for classroom activity and education as a whole. Students and teachers alike need to adapt to this change as it will bring the classroom into an important new age appropriation and will be vitally important for the years to come.Web 2.0 brings creativity to learning styles of students and is more adaptable for students who do not do as well in the current classroom and educational experience.By encouraging and insisting of students developing their own educational experience students will unknowingly be engaging in constructivism and a collaborative way of learning.

Article on Web 2.0!

Here is an intresting article about Web 2.0 i found while researching for my essay!

have a read!

Developing a web 2.0 learning project.

Put into the context of students working in a project. The project needs to be able to be done at home by the students. Involve the parents-very active involvement with the parents and the students. This is so as not only to get the students to do the project but you are teaching the parents about web two

  1. design a project based in web 2 technology
  2. make sure it involves the parents in everyway. So the parents really understand how modern technology is being used for education.

get the students to teach someone else= students will learn best

construct the project in a way that the parents MUST complete some part of the assignment.

A good idea is to send home a note regarding the assignment, and letting them know before. We want the parents to be involved in the learning so that the students will receive more affirmation from parents.Zac Efron<—–it really is educational :p SUPRISE MEL AND RHIANNON :o )

A chalkies Future???

A comment on my Blog :o)

well over the last couple of weeks you may have noticed a change in the apperance and content of my blog. It seems to be developing each and everyweek, adding new educational infomation and a comment about different Web 2.0 services that add educational value to the internet!.

the apperance of the blog has changed due to my very clever classmates teaching us new ways to make our blog more appealing. theres nothing more attractive than a stand out blog! :o ) one classmate taught us how to access “widgets” not entirely sure what these things are but they sound intresting and have made my  blog look more sophisticated!

so the only reason my blog has achieved the eye-candy status of educational blogs, is from the input from my classmates. we all teach each other new ways to make our blogs more intresting!….nothing better than future teachers, being taught to be collaborators, collaborating in achieving VERY attractive blogs!!!

 ENJOY!
